Johannesburg - Transnet chief harbour master Rufus Lekala wants an apology from the BBC after the television station mistakenly broadcast his name as "Gay Marriage" during an interview, the Sowetan reported on Thursday.

The interview, which was reportedly broadcast globally to more than 71 million viewers, was conducted on Tuesday.

Lekala was being interviewed by the BBC about the Fifth Brics Summit which ended on Wednesday in Durban.

The Sowetan reported that Lekala initially laughed off the error. Viewers who saw it took pictures of the screen strap and circulated them on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

"We understood that it was a mistake. But we have asked the BBC to explain how this happened," Transnet spokesperson Lunga Ngcobo was quoted as saying.

International news have in the last few days been dominated by debates on gay marriage in the United States. It is believed the graphic for that story was erroneously paired with Lekala's interview.
