Johannesburg - The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) is considering teaming up with lawyer Dali Mpofu in his court application against President Jacob Zuma and Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, The New Age reported on Monday.

Mpofu was seeking legal fees for representing 270 mineworkers in the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the Marikana shooting, which claimed 34 lives last year. Another ten people were killed in the preceding week.

BLA president Busani Mabunda was quoted as saying the association was considering joining in the case as friends of the court, given that the issue was raised before but nothing was done.

"It is unfortunate that Mpofu was left with no choice but to take legal action, because all channels have been exhausted," Mabunda told the newspaper.

He said that if the Legal Aid Board could not provide the funding, the state had to step in.

"We are talking about poor and marginalised people here. It will have a negative outcome if the mineworkers are not adequately represented."

Last week, Mpofu said he would challenge Zuma and Radebe in the North Gauteng High Court while the commission was in recess.
