Babies evacuated after hospital fire
Johannesburg - Four babies have been evacuated from the Nelson Mandela Academic University hospital in Mthatha, after a fire broke out on the premises, the Eastern Cape health department said on Sunday.
Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the babies were moved to another hospital as a precautionary measure, after a fire in the hospital's supply chain offices around 22:00 on Saturday.
The origin of the fire is believed to have been in a cupboard at the offices where cleaning chemicals were stored.
No one was injured and no severe damage was caused with fire fighters responding quickly, he said.
Kupelo said police were investigating and the health department would also conduct its own investigation, after a separate fire in the same hospital in April led to about R5m in medicine being destroyed.
