Baby Blacks face Cape Town rape claim

2012-06-25 07:58

Cape Town - A woman has laid charges of rape against four members of the New Zealand Under-20 rugby team - nicknamed the “Baby Blacks”, a report said on Monday.

It is alleged that the four raped the 22-year-old woman at the Southern Sun Hotel in Newlands, the New Age reported.

Police spokesperson Colonel Vish Naidoo confirmed the rape charge.

“The victim could not tell detectives who raped her because she couldn’t remember anything about the incident,” Naidoo said.

However, blood was allegedly found on a sheet.

“The team and team management co-operated fully and assisted police with their enquiries, after which police advised they were happy for all team members to travel out of South Africa,” a spokesperson from the New Zealand Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry said.

And now the perpetrators got the permission from the police to leave the country after having their way with the victim. This is also the last anyone will hear of the incident, now can someone tell me, IS THIS JUSTiCE ?

      cary.seach - 2012-06-25 08:32

Innocent until proven guilty and we do have extradition treaties with New Zealand. If they are charged they will return and stand trial. What is it with jumping up and down without ANY facts? As usual News24 put a really poorly written article up with no facts. SENSATIONALIST JOURNALISM!!

      matthew.swanepoel.9 - 2012-06-25 08:45

All news 24 can do is sensationalistic journalism. Its embarassing.

      Raeez - 2012-06-25 08:52

It might be "sensationist Jounalism" but its working Cary, you keep on coming back to read the news arent you?lol. Anyway, I really hope the girl is lying...

      customdesign - 2012-06-25 08:57

Peter, where do you get off on calling the girl a hooker? do you know her or the situation? and all the likes it got- you people are pathetic

      richard.hipkin - 2012-06-25 09:18

@john, so you have found them guilty by media?

      lotterg - 2012-06-25 09:30

@Carey, there is no extradition treaty with NZ.

      Ed - 2012-06-25 09:58

innocent till proven guilty in this case...seems that SA woman like making this accusation against AB players...this is the second time.

      zambezi.river - 2012-06-25 10:34

      The Western Cape AGAIN!

      Squeegee - 2012-06-25 13:43

The facts are that rape charges have been laid. That is news. For once I don't think this is sensationalist by News24. I doubt whether this will 'disappear'. It takes huge guts to report a rape. Typically, so many men immediately blame the woman. I hope they find the truth and deal with the guilty severely.

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-25 14:28

Agreed John. Carey - it's not "sensationalist journalism" - rape is a very serious charge! It's not the first time a rape charge is brought against the thugs that ply their trade as New Zealand rugby players! Remember Roger Randle - winger for the Waikato Chiefs - who raped that woman in a hotel room in Durban back in the 90's?? Case got mysteriously "dropped" after legal wrangling... How much of this goes on - often unreported or the case gets 'squashed' or the victim paid out of court?? Players on tour - all too often - get carried away - and don't understand that "no" is NO. I hope the woman concerned is ok. Let's not forget about her. Also a warning to all women out there - be careful when hanging around touring sportsmen in bars - and possibly agreeing to go somewhere with them...

  • catgirl1971 - 2012-06-25 08:11

What a poorly written article (as usual). Was she raped or not? If these members were allowed to leave SA then it seems to me that they are innocent. Why can't she remember who they are - is she lying or were drugs used? Very fishy indeed, so why publish this lame story that has no facts just speculation.

      gregory.wellsclifton - 2012-06-25 08:21

Because it makes people like you and I read it and leave comments?

      Mike - 2012-06-25 11:04

Media24 favouring quantity over quality as usual

      Raymond - 2012-06-25 13:05

And I suppose the alleged rapists were All Blacks? :)

      Peter - 2012-06-25 13:14

RATFL Airborne, LOL. C'mon Safricans, that was good.

      Squeegee - 2012-06-25 13:46

Because this is not a TV show. News breaks little bits at a time. If all the facts were known they could have had the court case by this afternoon and still had time for seven commercials.

      Raymond - 2012-06-25 14:06

Peter Walters, is that you from a mining company in Randfontein?

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-25 14:33

Catgirl - Rohypnol - the "date rape" drug. Heard of it? Very patchy or sketchy memory is exactly what happens. One is awake at the time - yet very little is remembered in coherent, cognisant, form. Also - the stuff is untraceable in the victim's system less than 12 hours later... Very scary, evil, stuff.

      catgirl1971 - 2012-06-25 17:17

@ Nick. Read my post; I raised the question of drugs. Yes I have heard of Rohypnol aka Roofies. I think any educated adult woman in the world knows about it and to beware of it. However this story is so patchy and there's been no updates to it so will we ever know the truth? My personal opinion is that she willingly had sex with them (remember she pitched up drunk @ the hotel) and when she sobered up she felt terrible and couldn't admit to the truth so cried rape instead.

      alansmartSnr - 2012-06-25 18:00

A poorly written report is better than no report at all. 'Tis true that they could have elaborated a bit more..but then when it comes to news the idea is to get it out as soon as possible.. it can always get followed up with more information as it becomes available at a later stage.

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-26 12:16

@ Catgirl - how do we know she pitched up drunk at the hotel? No mention of that at all in the article. I think she might have agreed to 'go somewhere' with them - but not to having sex with 4 guys.. Somewhere along the line Rohypnol, or something similar, was put into her drink (earlier at a bar?) - and she was 'co-erced' or cajoled into going along with them to the hotel room - which she might have willingly agreed to (under the circumstances/influence) - where the subsequent rape occurred.. This kind of behaviour happens quite a bit with touring sportsmen (stories one hears) - yet inevitably most are swept under the carpet or handled out of court, or don't feature in the media - or simply never get reported because the women concerned (the victims) feel too embarrassed or the like... Sad - but sometimes true. Women must be careful when hanging around in "groupies" with touring sportsmen in bars - after a few drinks some are nothing more than walking ego's on steroids - and then cross the line when "no" is meant to mean NO.

I think every travelling sports team must have a disclaimer form, make every girl sign it before agreeing to go to the hotel room. How many times have heard this. Interested to see how this ends, for a number of reasons. Hope she is not another girl shouting "WOLF".

      Penny - 2012-06-25 11:08

You forget that she didn't say she was visiting the Baby Blacks but was going to her "cousins" room. She would not have signed any disclaimer in this instance.

    This story sounds dodgy.

  • kevin.day.7370 - 2012-06-25 09:04

I agree that with the comments saying that this is a poorly-written article. "Blood was found on a sheet" -helloooo, quite a few of the players sustained cuts during the game. I am sure that if there is a crime, it will be dealt with appropriately. If there isn't, I expect to see a News24 article setting the record straight.

      Michaele - 2012-06-25 09:46

Hi Kevin, Logic tells me that if you play rugby, sustaing a "bleeding" injury you don't go to bed with it bleeding. Additionally, this will not be the first accusation of some form of sexual harassment by a "wannabe" after some money. If memory serves me right, Shane Warne had the same happen to him. The answer to this is do not place yourself in a vulnerable position voluntarily.

  • reagan.titus.5 - 2012-06-25 09:09

      catgirl1971 - 2012-06-25 09:27

Why even bother using such a picture? Doesn't imply rape. Really, News24 must jack up their journalists, editors and articles!

  • rudi.strydom.549 - 2012-06-25 09:16

It is because of comments like this on this articel that so few rape cases are reported!

      stanley.marries - 2012-06-25 09:56

thankyou for this comment rudi..I really feel sad for women in this country..I imagine if it was one of my relatives or someone I know..some people do not think before they open their mouths or put a comment here on news24...Since when did we become so insensitive?

  • gary.wilby.18 - 2012-06-25 09:19

How can she lay charges of rape, if she cannot rememeber what happened??

  • Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-25 09:41

If she was drugged then really wont remember anything rape is serious issue and you ruin someone's life if you go around falsely accusing them

      Emily-Jane Elson - 2012-06-25 09:57

But if it did happen, imagine HER trauma! Firstly, she probably shouldn't have been there, but four rugby players could easily have overpowered and drugged her.. But because she was drugged and can't remember it'll probably get thrown out which is something she'll have to live with..

      stanley.marries - 2012-06-25 10:07

''FAULSELY ACCUSING THEM''???...I would think that you as a woman would take this matter more seriously..i bet you wouldn't want people to comment this way if it happend to cassandra(and I honestly DO NOT hope it does)...come on lady!!

      sango.jika - 2012-06-25 10:25

would u be saying the same sh**t if it was a South african who is being accused of rape?

      Penny - 2012-06-25 11:17

@Emily-Jane 1. She allegedly "doesn't remember anything" so how can she be traumatised? 2. It transpires that only one player is said to have been involved not four. 3. You state she was "drugged" - wow, you're wanted at the forensic labs, they are backed up for years, your foresight could be put to good use.

  • stanley.marries - 2012-06-25 09:48

I think I speak for all people who has sense when I say that justice should take it's course before I condem anyone on this matter. It's no use to start making unsubstantiated comments eg. ''What was she doing there in the first place?. . .How can she lay charges if she don't know who it was or what happend''.....I think if it was a relative of mine who made the accusations,I would stand by her no matter what. The MAIN reason rape cases do not get reported in SA is for the simple fact that victims feel like most of the times their cases will be crushed, like some of the comments allready here on News24!!!!

      rudi.strydom.549 - 2012-06-25 11:55

I could not say it beter Stanley. The mentality is really sick in some of these comments.

  • Maria - 2012-06-25 09:50

Blood was allegedly found on a sheet - which means she was stabbed maan not raped - News 24 please get you facts right - since when if there's blood on the sheet somebody is raped?? Get the girl to be tested before you claim she was raped. If she can,t remember anything, how come she remembers being raped mxm. Oh before I forget let me go get some catch-up, spread a little in my sheet, call the Police and claim I've been raped.

      catgirl1971 - 2012-06-25 09:56

The article didn't state whose blood\r\nit allegedly was. Tests should've been conducted as to exactly whose blood it allegedly is. No mention made that she was examined after being allegedly raped and specimens taken which is what would happen in the event of a rape being reported.

      dudu.son.1 - 2012-06-26 03:32

  • sfisob.ngubane - 2012-06-25 10:15

It pity that most of da comment are bias and they are taking sides,if this case was of other race or is involving Bafana Bafana the comment will be different from this or if it was Mr Zuma JG . Because it Baby Black and they are white they are innocent before you. Let wait and see the outcome. Let not found them guilt until court did so.

      Aniaback - 2012-06-25 10:58

I hate to rain on your race parade (WHY does everything have to be about race in SA? every time? Even when it isn't? Jeez), but the Baby Blacks are not white. Get your facts straight, sir, while brushing up on your grammar and spelling.

      alansmartSnr - 2012-06-25 18:50

..sfisob.ngubane..Well in our country it is part of life. Its in the genes of most of our people. We, however, are dealing with a completely different pack of cards and a different level of civilization. I beleive this "poor" chick was out for a jol and got more than she bargained for. I also feel sorry for her but if you play with fire...

  • Patrick Cawood - 2012-06-25 10:16

Was expecting something like this from the Argentina team not the Baby Blacks, as we all know the reputation the Argies have in CT Pitching up drunk and making up a story to end up in the players rooms Think you may of been asking for trouble

  • jonathan.koekemoer.35 - 2012-06-25 10:19

When are touring Rugby teams going to learn to stay away from potential trouble like this. It happens everytime, how many 'rape' accusations need to happen before team management wakes up!! Lock your boys up for the night, keep them away from the clubs and bars or supervise them.

  • michelle.langenhoven.5 - 2012-06-25 10:33

Can't remember anything but can remember being raped. can she remember how she got there!! She was either drugged by the baby blacks, SHE used drugs OR SHE WAS DRUNK!! Seems like the same situation Alex Ferguson was in a couple of years back.

  • rinao - 2012-06-25 10:40

She can't identify anyone or have any memory of the so called incident. I would say this is extremely suspicious perhaps no rape even occurred.

  • Aniaback - 2012-06-25 10:44

Speaking as a woman who's once ended up in a rugby player's hotel room (no, he didn't pay me; yes, we were drunk; yes, it was fun; and so what), I can tell you guys for free that international sportsmen need not drug nor rape women. Women trip all over themselves to get a piece of the limelight by association. Be that as it may, I truly hope this girl knows what she's talking about/semi-remembering - it would be a shame to have hazy memories affect the lives and careers of "boys". "Boys". That's what everyone keeps calling them. That's what they are. What a sad day, for everyone involved.

      brenda.yelvertonburns - 2012-06-25 11:19

So by your logic, no sportsman would ever rape? That's a rather broad statement, is it not? Rape is not restricted to class, colour, financial status, education. I suppose you also believe that Mike Tyson did not rape that young girl a few years back??

      brenda.yelvertonburns - 2012-06-25 11:20

PS speak for yourself before you say 'women trip all over themselves to get a piece of the limelight by association'. SOME women would be a more accurate comment.

      Aniaback - 2012-06-25 17:30

I beg your pardon. In an effort to share my opinion (rather than argue logically about something I have as little information about as the person who wrote the original article), I forgot to mind my good manners of semantics and generalisation. PS, you will note I did not say "all" women. Nor did I imply it.

  • thugmuffin13 - 2012-06-25 10:53

Honestly, everyone commenting that news24 readers are biased, racist and all that crap! Honestly just shut up and think about it logically! She doesn't remember who raped her or recall what they look like! How can she then recall it was four men that did it? Not more or less? If someone accused Bafana Bafana of rape with the exact same story then we would also be on Bafana Bafana's side. So stop being useless and think about it a little! Not everyone in this damn country is a racist!

  • Sanele - 2012-06-25 11:38

The comments prove that we have become a society that judges before actually \attempting\ to be in someone else's shoes as a man I'm worried women abuse of any nature is wrong and god forbid it happens to some of the women saying \well she must have been drunk\ imagine if it was your sis?let's find the truth and rape isn't a braai topic its an issue of absolute importance so support don't distort the image!

  • Moi - 2012-06-25 11:44

She claims she was raped, but at the same time, can't remember the incident?? Well, either she is lying, or she was drugged?? If the police allowed them to leave the country, I'd have to assume that there wasn't sufficient (or any) evidence to charge them.

  • Cherri - 2012-06-25 13:15

Here we go again - similar story to that of the Argentinian rugby players not so long ago and then it was found to be a load of hogwash. She can't remember anything about the incident, but knows she was raped. Lady (and I use that term loosely) what were you doing in their hotel room??

      brenda.yelvertonburns - 2012-06-25 18:53

Cherri, perhaps like so many others on this thread, she naively believed that international sports players are not capable of rape? Going to a strange man's hotel room is definitely a very stupid idea, but she is young and may well have thought she would be safe with them, for exactly the reasons so many others here have put forward. Either way, making a bad decision does not give any man the right or the license to rape a woman.

      cherri.pye.5 - 2012-06-25 20:08

Brenda, she's 22 years old - how stupid and naive can she be? She was clever enough to tell the hotel staff she was going to visit her cousins and knew exactly which room these guys were in, according to the IOL report. Sounds like a financial transaction gone bad to me.

  • Andre - 2012-06-25 14:01

These young, and not so young, women follow the rugby players (and other sports as well) and just like to party. These things will happen if you allow yourself to be in those situations. She most probably had a lot to drink, and goodness what else, so she cannot remember the incident. How does she know who, and how many men "raped" her? It is going to be difficult to prove!

  • mhla.nombembe - 2012-06-25 15:26

Im trying to defend Baby Blacks but how does she know its four of them who raped her if she doesnt remember the actual process . .????? . . I dont see these players puting their country which has so much respect/dignity on rugby aspect easily just like that because they know the results . . FUTHER INVESTIGATIONS IS EXTREMLY NEEDED ..

  • shellerjc.rjc - 2012-06-25 16:10

Dont be so quick to judge the players - Its possible this girl saw this as a quick scam to get a hold of money.

  • gordon.turner.37 - 2012-06-25 16:18

I do not wish to make light of this situation at all, but from where I was sitting in the stands at Newlands, the only victims were the All Blacks front row. The Jnr boks fked them properly. Police are not going to mucked about with this and the Kiwi media won't let it go either. These guys need to wake up to the fact that they are not a free ticket.

Is it not strange that EVERYTIME NZ, AUS, ENG come to visit SA, some women claim they have been drugged / raped. Now I don't know if this article is true or the women is telling the truth, however, ALOT of women will try anything for a quick buck - look at the Sir Alex Ferguson incident many years ago - ALL A LIE!!! Sports stars - some of them are dogs, some of them get targeted as potential money spinners - Girls, have the decency to report rape if it is true, DON'T CRY WOLF on something that is so vile, hurtful and damaging to both women and 'innocent' men. Believe me, I don't for one minute think every sportsman rape claim is false, but I feel this one could be opportunistic, I hope for her sake she is being opportunistic as there is NOTHING worse than rape...
