Baby abandoned in Soweto

2012-04-30 13:49

Johannesburg - Police are searching for a woman who abandoned her one-day-old baby on a house doorstep in Zola, Soweto, Gauteng police said on Monday.

"We don't know who might have dropped the child off on the doorstep," said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

"The child was taken to a doctor for treatment and later taken to a place of safety."

The person who found the child late on Sunday evening did not know the baby's mother and reported the incident to police, said Makhubela.

Police had opened a case of child abandonment.

As cruel as this mother is, I have to say that I'm relieved that the headline of the story is not "One-day-old baby strangled or thrown down toilet by mother"!!! I'm actually not sure how else the message of free contraceptives can be instilled in some individuals minds.

I think a lot of woman in SA still has a misconception about contraceptives but I totally agree with you. I think we should also restructure the child grants in such a way to deter big families that they can't afford to take care of without negatively affecting the lives of these children who are innocents.

Religion is the cause of a lot of women not being allowed to use contraceptives. My understanding though is that it takes a MAN and a woman to make a baby otherwise she gives birth to a baby Jesus. When are men going to be forced to take responsibility for the wild oats they sow??????

Do you remember when the use of condoms was advised to stave off HIV? There was an outcry that this was an attempt by the whites to prevent the blacks from proving there virility and growing their numbers. I wonder how they feel about it now? Still don't believe that HIV exists and that unprotected sex can kill you?

I remember back when Aid"s was first being talked about and it was more prevalent in the black population, i asked some well dressed black geltelman in a bar one night what they thought of this and i was told that this was a sickness invented by the whites and given to the blacks to curb there population. I was amazed to say the least

and they refuse to sterilise women who cannot afford nor desire to look after children yet they continue to have unprotected sex and infect themselves and others. It beggars belief that a nation can shoot itself in the foot repeatedly and STILL blame it on the flipping apartheid that is over and gone with.

At least she abandoned the baby on somebody's doorstep and not in a rubbishbin or in a toilet. Not that it makes it right, but she must have a reason for doing it. Maybe she's not capable (financially or emotionally) for taking care of her baby and feels he/she will have a better life with someone else. Maybe she is just a teenager. Maybe she doesn't know about the procedures of giving your baby up for adoption. Let's not be cruel. We don't know what her reasons may be for making such a difficult decision.
