Polokwane - A senior manager has been suspended at the
George Masebe hospital where four babies died, the Limpopo health department
said on Thursday.
"We are aware of the suspension of a senior manager at
the hospital, but we don't have the details yet. We are still waiting for the
district office to supply us with details," said spokesperson Snenhlanhla
Gumede.
The four babies died on Friday. At the time, a doctor at the
hospital, in Mokopane, said there were not enough doctors to treat patients
there.
Limpopo health MEC Norman Mabasa, who has launched an
investigation into the deaths, was shocked at the state of affairs at the
hospital when he visited it on Monday.
On seeing patients left unattended by doctors, he described
the situation as "appalling".
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union has
blamed hospital management for the deaths.
