Baby dies in East Rand accident

2012-04-07 08:10

Johannesburg - A baby was killed and seven people injured in a single vehicle accident on the N12 in Springs, east of Johannesburg, paramedics said on Saturday.

The driver of a Jeep lost control of the vehicle after the Groenfontein/Croydon off-ramp on Friday afternoon, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

"There may possibly have been some form of mechanical failure to the vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle then left the road and rolled a number of times. The 14-month-old baby had already died at the scene due to the extensive nature of injuries sustained."

Jackson said the seven people were treated on the scene before they were transported to nearby hospitals.

Unfortunately, if you look at the time of the accident, the fact that it was a holiday and also that there were at least seven people and the baby in a five seat vehicle, then the assumption that it was mechanical failure is the least of the evils considered. The most likely reason is that the NUT behind the steering wheel was INcompetent, INcapable or INebriated.

With the roadworks going on on the N12 it is a very unpleasant experience to drive on it! We avoid it at all costs, rather using the N17 if we can. Condolences to the family of the baby and a speedy recovery to the injured.

Mechanical failure or not, 7 people plus a child in a 5 seater, it does'nt take a genius to do the math Mike, the child should have been in a car seat, but like alot of parents on our roads believe, it just is'nt important enough. Very sad....
