Baby dumped in toilet outside pub

Mahikeng - A newborn baby boy was found in a pit latrine outside a pub near Rustenberg in the North West, police said on Saturday.

The infant is healthy and now in the care of staff at the Job Shimankana Tabane Provincial Hospital in Rustenberg.

He was found at Big Momma's pub in the Leraragatlha village in Tlhabane at 18:30 on Tuesday, North West police spokesperson Captain Tselane Nkala said.

"We are searching for a 21-year-old woman who was pregnant and then started bleeding at the pub," she said.

Police have been to the woman's home but she has not returned and police suspect she has run away.

"The woman was taken to the clinic but no-one at the pub saw her return with the baby."

A man using the toilet heard crying coming from the toilet pit and alerted the police who rescued the infant.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder, Nkala said.

"Why a woman throws a newborn baby into a toilet pit no one knows. We need to find this mother to understand why she did this," said Nkala.
