Polokwane - A police patrol team found a 5-month-old baby crawling alone in the streets of Zone F in Mankweng, Limpopo, on Saturday night.

After a massive search, his 28-year-old mother was tracked down and will appear in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of child neglect.

"A police patrol team came across a crawling baby at about 22:00 on Saturday night in Zone F. He was wearing brown trousers and a blue T shirt. Police immediately launched a massive search for the mother. With the help of the community the mother was arrested on Sunday,"  said Mankweng police spokesperson Constable Moses Molepo.

He said the baby will be put in a place of safety.

Meanwhile, a man accused of raping a 6-year-old child is also expected to appear in the same court on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old man, who lives next door to the girl in Ga-Mothiba near Nobody, was arrested on Sunday.

"The child was playing in the suspect's yard at about 08:00 on Sunday when she was allegedly dragged into the house and repeatedly raped," said Constable Molepo.

Later, when one of the girl's relatives realised the child had been raped, the police were called in.
"The child was taken to a doctor at Mankweng Hospital who confirmed the rape. The suspect was then arrested at his house at about 11:00 the same day," said Molepo.
