Johannesburg - A month-old baby girl was kidnapped from the Harry Gwala Clinic in Zamdela, near Sasolburg, on Tuesday afternoon, Free State police said.

The 29-year-old mother was at the clinic with her two daughters at noon on Tuesday when a woman approached her and told her the baby was beautiful, Constable Peter Kareli said.

"The mother took her 6-year-old daughter inside and asked the woman to hold her baby. She went into the consultation room and when she came out a while later to check on the baby, they were gone."

Kareli said witnesses saw the woman, in her 30s, leave the clinic in a hurry, but did not suspect anything at the time.

The mother went outside to look for the woman, could not find her and reported her baby missing.

"Police searched as far as Heilbron, Koppies and Deneysville, making stop-and-searches to vehicles, but with no success."

Kareli said the woman was wearing a long pink skirt and an orange top with a light blue scarf on her head.

The baby was wearing a pink jumpsuit with a pink hat and was wrapped in a brown blanket.
