Baby shot in jewellery store heist

2012-06-16 16:01

Johannesburg - Three people, including a baby, were shot and injured in a robbery at Randridge Mall in Johannesburg on Saturday, Gauteng police said.

A fourth person, a policeman, was wounded in a shootout during a chase that ensued, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

At 10:30, five armed men entered a jewellery store at the mall and held the staff at gunpoint before stealing jewellery.

Dlamini said a 56-year-old manager and a 1-and-half year-old baby were shot in their legs. Another 47-year-old man was shot in the stomach.

The gang fled in a bakkie.

Police gave chase and a police officer was shot and injured, said Dlamini.

A short while later, the getaway vehicle lost control and crashed. One robber, who was found injured inside the bakkie, was arrested.

A second robber was apprehended after he was tracked with a police dog.

Two others were found hiding in a house and handcuffed.

The fifth robber escaped and was being sought by police.

Police seized three bags of jewellery and two firearms.

Job well done SAPS ! It's a sad state of affairs when we take our life in our hands by going shopping. These criminals deserve a harsh sentence.

Bring back the death penalty or better yet bring in Arab law. You steal- lose a hand. Steal again - lose the other hand. etc. Personally I would love to see all rapists lose their dicks. None of this chemical castration stuff. Thieves lose hands. Maybe that will stop some of the crime. At least the cops chased after them and sorted them out. I was on Beyers Naude when they were chasing the robbers.

      Michael - 2012-06-17 00:03

Sharia law is a little to much

      Boer - 2012-06-17 01:33

I agree with you bring back the death penalty or do the Arab law thing.

  • luvgp - 2012-06-16 17:17

Cruel criminals.Praying for the injured. One thing I used to like about Bheki Cele is shoot to kill.Imagine that innocent baby. Section 49 of the CPA must be amended. For the sake of that baby this right to life musnt be looked at.They were supposed to be shot and killed.I still say big ups to Saps members that are fighting crime with risking their own life.Well done!

A job well done for the police who caught the criminals, but how is it going to help the public because those criminals won't last even a day in prison.innocent people get hurt while they live freely.

  • Gideon Kgops - 2012-06-17 10:34

great job,I expect no bail nd they deserve hell, our nation suffers because of such people and if they receive a change we should expect more bad to happen. i'm begging of u offer them no bail.

  • sinentokozo.sgudla - 2012-06-17 11:26

Amp up security at Malls or does something worse than this have to happen before anyone does anything?

  • malcolm.j.patterson.1 - 2012-06-17 12:02

I've said it before and I'll say it again, armed robbers should receive the death penalty. They don't give a fig for anyones safety as long as they get what they want. How many times haven't we heard of innocent bystanders being killed or injured by stray bullets.

  • lenny.kagiso - 2012-06-17 19:02

Thanks police for their good job!!! Mzanzi

  • elizabeth.a.illing - 2012-06-18 16:25

We were just about caught up in this. We must also commend Beagle Watch. They were also involved with the chase. Two nights previously, about 500 metres away a house was robbed and one of the robbers was shot dead. May they all rest in Hell!!! enough of this we seem like we are living in the wild west

  • tshepos.setiso - 2012-07-06 18:13
