Baby thrown into pit toilet then burnt

Polokwane - A 32-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the death of her baby in Sekgosese, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

"The 14-month-old baby girl was allegedly thrown alive into a pit toilet at Lemondokop village in Sekgosese [on Sunday]," Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

"It is alleged the suspect later burnt the child with papers," he said.

The charred body was discovered by police on Monday after a tip-off from a nearby resident.

Ramatseba said the mother might have been under strain as she had five other children to look after.

"Mothers who are struggling to raise their children are urged to approach relevant government departments in order to get assistance rather than resorting to the killing of their children," he said.

The woman would appear in Sekgosese Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
