Backing Zuma at what cost?

Dear Editor,
The ANC National Executive Committee has formed a task team to prepare and manage its response to the arms deal saga.
For weeks, every single judge in the Constitutional Court was drawn into political manoeuvring around it. Almost every single moment of every working day of Zuma and other high-ranking ANC officials is dedicated to the fight against corruption charges.
So far, Jacob Zuma's legal activities have cost an absolute fortunate, to the point where he has become financially depleted, which is astonishing for a man of his means and reach.
Today, all top-ranking ANC leaders are travelling to Durban for the resumption (and re-postponement) of his trial. It is also planned that the occasion will occupy not only the ANC, but also all of KwaZulu-Natal - instead of taking people to work, all taxi associations have agreed to ferry people to the court proceedings, in addition to those being bussed there.
While millions left destitute by hunger, joblessness and crime are now being further abandoned; the ANC's fight for Zuma has completely consumed it. No ANC leadership resources remain available and visibly active in governance.
The ANC government leadership's time, energy and work - for which the people in this country pay - are being diverted from their constitutional obligations to a questionable legal battle for one man. Whether he is guilty or not, pales in comparison.
How on earth can this indulgence be justified when it is, literally, at the expense of every other person in this country? Is Zuma really worth it, and also our last leadership resort?
Are no other suitable leaders available, who would also cost the ANC, and the country, less?
Francois Visagie,
Gordon's Bay
