Bakkie crashes into family home

Durban - A double-cab bakkie crashed into the wall of a KwaZulu-Natal family’s bedroom on Saturday night, giving the family of six a huge fright.

The Daily News reported that the family from Eastwood in Pietermaritzburg was lucky to be alive.

Nicole Diedricks, 25, said her family was gathered in the bedroom at about 22:00, chatting and hanging out when they suddenly heard screaming brakes and a loud bang.

The bakkie apparently hit a tree first, which lessened the impact of the accident.

She and her father, Dudley, mom Henrietta as well as their three grandchildren, were not hurt.

“A man crawled out of the double cab. There were also about six females in the vehicle and I could see liquor bottles all over,” said Nicole Diedricks.  

The driver of the bakkie, who was believed to be drunk, fled the accident scene.

Three women were taken to hospital.
