Bakkie hits cyclists, killing 3

Oudtshoorn - Two men and a woman were killed when a bakkie drove into a group of cyclists outside Oudtshoorn on Monday, Western Cape police said.

Eleven cyclists were riding on the R62 towards Calitzdorp around 06:15 when a bakkie tried to overtake a truck coming from the opposite direction, Captain Bernadine Steyn said.

"The bakkie drove into the group of cyclists and two men and one woman died on the scene," said Steyn. The accident happened about 9km outside Oudtshoorn.

"One man was taken to hospital. He was in a serious but stable condition."

The 62-year-old bakkie driver, from Ladysmith, was treated for shock before being discharged from hospital.

Cases of culpable homicide were opened for the deaths of the three cyclists.

No arrests had been made yet.
