Johannesburg - A ballet director has distanced herself from comments by Leroy Mokgatle's grandmother that she knew he would win a gold medal at an international ballet competition.

"We did not have an inkling he would be awarded the gold that has not been awarded for years to a boy," said Esmé Harris, director of Art of Motion, the vocational school that Mokgatle attends.

She was unhappy about Mokgatle's grandmother, Tryphina, telling News24 how proud she was of her grandson, who won the finals of the Genee International Ballet Competition in London on Saturday.

Tryphina told News24: "We expected it to happen, that boy used to like dancing from age 5. Woooo hoo. We are hugging that boy. It's wonderful, amazing."

But Harris was unimpressed.

"It would be tragic if one sentence like, 'We knew he would win', impacted negatively on the thousands of the hours he has put in.

"'We knew he would win' - it is an arrogant statement... arrogance doesn't fit well."

She said a statement like that could damage the 15-year-old's reputation.

"He is humble, he is appreciative. He is the most magnificent and most beautiful personality. He has worked very hard, for 13, 14 hours a day to achieve this.

"What I'm trying to do is to protect," Harris said.
