Bathers warned against jelly fish

Cape Town - Bathers and surfers at Kommetjie and Scarborough are warned to be cautious as a "sizeable bloom" of jelly fish closes in on the shoreline of the area, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Saturday.

NSRI said in a statement that marine researcher Deborah Robertson-Andersson reported the jelly fish bloom, saying that bathers and surfers were at "some risk" of being stung in the coastal area outside Cape Town.

"Bathers and surfers are at some risk of being stung due to the large numbers being witnessed in a concentrated area."

People stung by the jelly fish should apply vinegar, to the sting.

"While the sting from these jelly fish is relatively moderate to humans, the risk is that a bloom could lead to a surfer or bather being stung multiple times which may be harmful."

The organisation said in an event of sustaining multiple stings people must consult a doctor.
