Bekkersdal tensions simmer around vote

2014-05-13 08:41

Residents of Bekkersdal, an area beset with violence in recent months, put tensions on ice for the vote.WATCH

Johannesburg - Bekkersdal, on the West Rand, was quiet on Tuesday after two killings in the area, Gauteng police said.

"At the moment it is quiet," Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said.

Police appealed for information after two people were killed and another was wounded in the area in the past few days.

On Friday an 18-year-old man was stabbed to death.

"There are allegations that he tried to rob somebody and the community attacked him... No one came forward with information as to exactly what happened."

Police wanted to hear from the person the man allegedly tried to rob, as no case had been opened with police.

On Saturday, two men, aged 20 and 21, were stabbed in an open veld in Bekkersdal. One was killed and the other was hospitalised.

No one had been arrested for either of the crimes by mid-morning on Tuesday.

Asked to comment on reports that the violence was gang-related, Mofokeng said: "We cannot confirm [about] the gangsters, we are appealing to the community for information."

On Monday he said parents escorted their children to the Simunye Secondary School to protect them, but could give no further information.

Gauteng education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said a "safety team" was sent to the school. It was working with police to stabilise the situation.

She said Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi wanted to uproot gangsterism at schools.
