A PASSIONATE Pietermaritzburg belly dancer has shimmied her way to the top with the Miss Belly Dance South Africa title under her coin belt.

Micah Van Schalkwyk (24) competed for the Miss Belly Dance title in Johannesburg on May 3 and made her city proud by bringing home the gold.

Van Schalkwyk said she had not expected to win the Miss Belly Dance South Africa title as she had competed before in 2010.

“This year when I competed I was so much more prepared and calm but I had not expected to win.”

She said it was a great achievement for her and an amazing title to have under her belt.

“It feels really good to have won and it is quite an accomplishment,” she said.

Van Schalkwyk was introduced to belly dancing at the age of 11 by a family friend, and discovered she had a natural talent for the dance style.

“Belly dancing is my passion. It is my life. I love absolutely everything about it — the music; the culture and the costumes,” she said.

After 13 years as a belly dancer, Van Schalkwyk opened her own belly dance school called Raqs Sharqi Dance Company in Pietermaritzburg, and teaches a fusion of a few different belly dancing styles including tribal and oriental.

“Belly dancing is an eclectic, beautiful, ancient dance form that has been reinvented. It is feminine and fierce at the same time.

“Belly dancing is so sensual and strong and it is creating a community of women across the world.

“The dance celebrates women. You don’t have to be a certain age, shape or size to dance and enjoy it. A woman can be an artist through the dance whatever their size or age.”

She said the revival of the dance has created a platform for women to be creative through dance and feel good about themselves and that no matter their age or size, they are strong, fierce and sensual
