Beuthin in court - not on holiday

Johannesburg - Convicted kidnapper and bodybuilder Gary Beuthin appeared briefly at the Johannesburg Regional Court on Thursday on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and escaping from custody.
Beuthin phoned his attorney Mike Werner from prison on Thursday to say he wanted to get to court to continue with a 10-year-old case
set to resume on Thursday. However, his transfer warrant was not
signed.
Magistrate Lucas Van Der Schyf signed a new warrant and postponed the case to Monday.
The charges relate to incidents in December 1990 and February 1991.
They precede the case for which he was sentenced on 31 August
1993, by the Johannesburg High Court to an effective 25 years'
imprisonment.
The 10-year-old case went to trial after the High Court case and has still to be finalised.
No evidence was heard during the past year mainly due to Beuthin undergoing an operation to his leg.
Werner said the story on the front page of a local newspaper on Thursday that Beuthin had been released from jail was "absolute nonsense". - Sapa
