Johannesburg - It could take up to 20 years to fully implement an IT system intended to be used for electronic police dockets, it was reported on Saturday.

The Saturday Star reported that the SA Police Service told Parliament that in the last 10 years, it had only managed to implement the system in 79 out of more than a 1 000 police stations.

Parliament heard that while some police officials had received training on how to use the system, many still preferred to use the old manual one.

The Integrated Case Docket Management System (ICDMS) was supposed to replace the current system and allow officers and detectives to create e-dockets that would also connect to the courts.

Around R148m had already been spent on the project.

Lieutenant-General Bonginkosi Ngubane said the upgrade of the police's electronic network was also a major stumbling block for the programme.

Some members of Parliament have called for the system to be scrapped, saying it would be outdated by the time it came into full implementation, reported the Saturday Star.

Ngubane, however, indicated that he would like the project to be fully implemented in the next two years.
