Cape Town - A couple riding a motorbike were killed on Sunday afternoon when their bike collided with a minibus taxi in North Pine, ER24 paramedics said.

Spokesperson Derrick Banks said the taxi had drifted into oncoming traffic when it collided with the bike.

"It is believed that two taxi drivers travelling down Old Paarl road were having an argument and somehow one of the taxis drove onto the opposite side of the road and never saw the couple on their motorbike heading towards them."

The couple died at the scene while the driver of the taxi was treated for minor injuries.

He said the couple were heading home in Kraaifontein from Brackenfell.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Lauren Copley said the couple were found lying about 100m apart.

"The man and woman, estimated to be in their thirties, were declared dead on the scene."

There was extensive damage to the front of the taxi and the motorbike.

Two passengers in the taxi sustained light neck and back injuries and were stabilised at the scene before being transported to Tygerberg hospital.

Copley said it was understood that police arrested the taxi driver on the scene.

Police could not be immediately reached for comment.
