Pretoria - A medical doctor with bipolar mood disorder stands accused of assaulting two women and damaging a car in a road rage incident in Pretoria.

Joseph Makwenya, 48, was denied bail in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court after the investigating officer said he was at times too unstable and a possible danger to himself and others, reported Beeld.

He is accused of assaulting Amanda Smit and another woman on 23 December 2012 and damaging the windscreen of another man’s car.

Makwenya said he worked as a doctor in the cardiovascular unit at the Dr George Mukhari hospital in Ga-Rankuwa.

He had been diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder in 1997 but didn’t take his medicine as he suffered setbacks.

He apparently suffered from hallucinations when not taking his medicine and had on one previous occasion taken off his clothes in public.

Makwenya said he had never been violent towards a patient.

Two doctors recommended that he be referred to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation.

Makwenya apparently told one of the doctors that in the December incident he had been defending himself against 22 people.
