Pretoria - An 80-year-old Pretoria woman's family treated her to a helicopter ride on her birthday - but the chopper crashed, according to a report on Wednesday.

Birthday girl Sanna van der Walt escaped serious injury, suffering only a few bruises and scratches.

Co-pilot Andre Potgieter told Beeld newspaper he was not sure what had caused the helicopter to crash at the Wonderboom airport in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

"The pilot jumped out to close the fuel cap... we then cut the safety belt of the 'tannie' [Van der Walt] with a knife, and got her out," said Potgieter.

No-one was seriously injured. Van der Walt was treated in hospital.
