Cape Town - The AbaThembu royal family has stepped in to help end a new family feud after yet another broke out in the Mandela household.

According to the Sunday Times, the row revolves around who is to step in as head of the household. The two contenders are Nelson Mandela's eldest grandson Mandla, 39, or his eldest living daughter, Makaziwe, 59.

Makaziwe stepped in as head of the family during the funeral proceedings but last week, a spokesperson for the AbaThembu, Chief Daladumo Mtirara, accused Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, of embarrassing the family after she issued a statement naming Makaziwe as the new head of the family.

Madikizela-Mandela is however adamant that Makaziwe would head the family in accordance with customary law and tradition.

However, the royal family said Madiba had made it clear in 2007 that the traditional spear of leadership be handed over to Mandla.

Nelson Mandela died on 5 December in his Houghton home in Johannesburg and was buried in Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.

Mandela was survived by his three daughters Makaziwe, Zenani Dlamini-Mandela and Zindziswa Mandela.

In a recent statement Madikizela-Mandela said in accordance with customary law and tradition, the eldest daughter, Makaziwe, would head the family and would make decisions with the support of her two sisters.
