Johannesburg - Two men were shot and killed on the N1 south near Randburg between the Malibongwe and Beyers Naude off-ramps, Johannesburg police said on Monday.
Captain Sphiwe Ndlovu said the bodies were discovered around 21:00 by Randburg police after police were notified of a shooting in the area.
A witness told police that two men in a Ssangyong Musso were stopped at the roadside. Four men in a Mitsubishi Pajero stopped near them and jumped out. The men in the Musso also jumped out and were shot down by men from the Pajero.
Two men from the Pajero then jumped into the Musso and drove over the bodies of the two men before parking the car and fleeing in the Pajero.
ER24 spokesperson Riana Beech said one man was shot three times in the chest and the other was shot twice in the back of the head. Both were declared dead on scene.
The motive for the murders is unknown and a case of murder has been opened.
