Bloemfontein - The matter against a couple, accused of brutal sexual assaults against their pre-teen daughter, has been postponed to Thursday, when a trial date in the regional court will be determined.

They are accused of forcing their 11-year-old daughter to have sex with men. The girl and her 9-year-old brother had also been forced to take drugs.

The father was not brought to court on Monday morning, but the mother, dressed in a charcoal hoody, denim jeans and sneakers, leaned nervously against the dock.

After the brief appearance, family members, including her mother and stepsister, tried to have a few words with her, but she was prompted by a policeman to shuffle away in her shackles, carrying a shopping bag and bright orange backpack.

The couple face charges of rape, sexual exploitation of children, child abuse and failure to comply with the commission against sexual offences against children.

During the bail application, the investigative officer, Lesenyengo Matekane, told the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court that the mother held down her daughter so her friends could rape her.

When she tried to escape, her mother, allegedly punched her and tried to break her daughter’s fingers.

The police began investigating after a social worker complained about the conditions the children lived in.

When police arrived at the house, their father allegedly hid the children in a room under blankets and dirty clothes.
