Bloemfontein - Residents of Zastron in the Free State are furious about the “rivers” of blood that are flowing through the town streets.

Residents claim an abattoir outside the town was pumping blood through the town sewerage system and it was coming out of the manholes in the town streets, reported Volksblad.

Despite several complaints to the Mohokare municipality, locals say nothing has been done to fix the problem.

The stench is said to be unbearable and the residents are nauseated by the sight of thick streams of blood.

Local businessman Johannes Pienaar said this had been going on for six months and clients were always complaining about the blood, which was affecting his business.

“The blood flows right here in front of our business in the street and the stench is absolutely unbearable.

“Municipal workers arrived, looked at the problem and disappeared again.”

Municipal manager Thabo Panyane said the problem was caused by two abattoirs that were illegally dumping their waste in the municipal sewerage system.

He said they had served subpoenas on the abattoirs and had also regularly cleared blockages in the system.

He said the abattoirs had agreed to buys septic tanks and, starting from Monday, would use them to dispose of their waste.
