Johannesburg - The bodies of two people killed in an air crash near Matibidi, bordering the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga, were recovered on Friday, police said.

Two men were flying near the farm Opdenburg in Dientjie when they crashed at around 15:00 on Thursday, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement.

The SA Civil Aviation Authority was investigating the cause of the crash.

Police, with the help of pathology, municipal, tourism services, and private security companies, retrieved the bodies from the aircraft's wreckage.

"The preliminary probe suggests that the victims, aged 63 and 47, are from New Zealand, but that information is yet to be confirmed," Mohlala said.

Police thanked those who helped with the recovery of the bodies, especially given the bad weather in the area.

- An earlier version of this story contained a photograph of a crashed plane taken by Eugene Gunning of Die Burger which was not related to this incident. News24 apologises for this error.
