Cape Town - The body of a seven-year-old boy, who was presumed to have drowned, was found in a Cape Town river on Friday, said Western Cape emergency services.

Spokesperson Keri Davids said the body was recovered at about 10:45 at the entrance to the Black River, in Athlone.

The boy was believed to have been playing alongside the Elsieskraal river on Wednesday, when he slipped into the river and was washed away by the current.

His body was found by helicopters in an aerial sweep of the area.
