Pietermaritzburg - A bodyguard of the Umsunduzi Municipality's mayor, who went missing after allegedly shooting dead his friend, will be brought to book before the end of this week, KwaZulu-Natal police vowed on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said police were following up good leads and that an arrest was imminent.
The bodyguard, Nkosi Ngubane, is one of three suspects in the shooting of Sibusiso Mashaba, 26, in Pietermaritzburg's Dambuza area on Sunday.
The Witness quoted Mashaba's brother, Botsotso Mashaba, as saying the bodyguard and his brother were friends.
The brother told the newspaper that Mashaba was travelling on the main road in Dambuza when he met Ngubane who was travelling with two other people.
Budhram said it was believed that Ngubane had playfully produced a firearm and pointed it in the direction of Mashaba and that a shot went off. As a result Mashaba lost control of his car. The vehicle rolled and hit a fence along the roadside.
One of the occupants later returned to the scene and was arrested.
Police were looking for Ngubane and the other remaining occupant of the car.
"We strongly believe that the arrest will be made any time from now. There is even a strong possibility that the arrest will be made today," he said.
