Boeremag judgment may take 3 weeks

2012-07-23 07:47

Pretoria - Judgment in the Boeremag treason trial is expected to begin in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday.

The trial of the 20 people, accused of 40 charges ranging from high treason to sabotage and murder, started more than eight years ago.

The charges arise from an alleged right-wing plot to violently overthrow the African National Congress government.

It is believed that it could take up to three weeks for Judge Eben Jordaan to deliver an abridged version of the judgment.

In closing arguments in November, the State asked for the conviction of all of the accused on a charge of high treason, arguing that their plan to violently overthrow the government was still very much alive.

Lead prosecutor Paul Fick, SC, argued that the accused had used farm security and Boer prophet Siener van Rensburg's visions as a smokescreen to drum up support for their coup plan.

In August 2010, Jordaan dismissed an application by brothers Herman, Johan and Kobus Pretorius to be declared prisoners of war so that they could be handed over to the SA National Defence Force.

They saw themselves as "soldiers in a liberation struggle" embroiled in an armed struggle aimed at self-determination for the "Boerevolk".

The Boeremag's 73-year-old chaplain, Gerhardus "Oom Vis" Visagie, was denied bail for the third time last Monday ahead of his planned spinal surgery.

Visagie underwent heart bypass surgery, following an escape attempt by five of the treason trial accused at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria in May last year.

When you are found guilty-and you will be, I only have two words for you: medical parole

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-23 08:10

damn right, it works for other terrorists why not the boeremag.

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-07-23 08:37

While I do not carry a flag for the ANC, I don't think overweight Selebi poses a danger to anyone's life. Neither does that crook Shabir. As for the Boeremag, they allegedly concocted plans to murder black people for no reason other than that we have a different skin colour. For that I hope they are sentenced to long term imprisonment so that they can have all the time in the world to enjoy growing their beards in C-Max

      ntsieni1 - 2012-07-23 08:40

Jack,,only if they are connected to highly political mafia they would get that medical parole, these guys will gone forever,,,u wil see the strenght of law on this guys

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-23 08:40

themba its the theory behind it, if someone up for 15 yrs imprisonment can simply be let out, regardless of the threat they pose, then the precident has been set and should apply to all

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-07-23 09:35

Britchford, they will have to fake illness, in which case they will have to ask the master himself: Shabir Sheik, with a little bit of help from old Jacky. But then they hate black people. So they won't get any advice :)

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-23 10:05

they will be faking as much as jackie, hospital staff have been quopted as saying he is not seriously ill, he gets in and out of his wheel chair unaided, he walks around his ward, i do not support the boeremag either, nor the anc, nor the da, so this is neutral, they should be allowed medical parole based on selebi style fake ilness

They derseve to rot in jail

      michil.chegwidden - 2012-07-23 08:55

Whats the difference between them and Selebe our Indian brother, are you really scared of a 73 year old LMAO

      azande.futhi - 2012-07-23 10:01

@Michil, u will agree that "high treason, sabotage, murder, attempted assassination of Madiba" and "Corruption" are very dismillar charges carrying very different weight.

      davin.hansen007 - 2012-07-23 11:42

@azande.futhi, just remember, Madiba was no different with the previous government. He was a bomb planter that tried to kill hundreds of innocent people, concidered a terrorist to those he tried to overthrow. Today he is a hero. These men here now are concidered terrorists today but in actual fact should also be seen as Freedom Fighters. They are fighting for what they believe in. All depends on who is holding the big stick.

They derseve to rot in jail

      jason.sole.92 - 2012-07-23 10:05

      not just them

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-23 10:31

Nkosnathi, many more deserve to rot in jail but they are paroled all the time.

  • julie.vanniekerk.3 - 2012-07-23 08:08

Impossible for a few people to overthrow a govt. as strong as the ANC but they are so afraid!

  • Shaun Robinson - 2012-07-23 08:13

@Jack - They won't be eligible buddy, wrong skin color and not enough friends in high places...

  • Shaun Robinson - 2012-07-23 08:15

What's worse, trying to over - throw the government or that same government stealing from the very people who put it into power?

  • Hugh - 2012-07-23 08:47

High treason, over throw the ANC government? That is happening without the Boeremag. If only the government would look upon the the theft of the money meant for the poor of the country, by their own officials as sabotage and a treasonous act. Anyway eight years is a ridiculous amount of time to find the evidence needed to have gone to trail. Worse still we read more about Mandela's trail in the news papers than this lot.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-07-23 09:25

Whether you are guilty or innocent, they are going to make you rot in jail for the rest of your lives. Derby-Lewis is much worse off than selibi and has served many many years behind bars, yet is still in a very very sick man and is still rotting in jail. Thats justice for you,

      africanwolf - 2012-07-23 09:46

Selebi did not kill anyone this is a fact as Derby-Lewis is a murderer

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-23 10:35

Africanwolf, Selebi did not kill anyone personally but the drugs his friends dealt with did. They could do this, thanks to him.

      azande.futhi - 2012-07-23 10:42

@jacqui, I like the "could" in your statement which shows probability that it may or may not occur. Derby Lewis is plain confirmed Murderer period.

  • rudi.j.vanvuren - 2012-07-23 09:43

Wow this is great! Overthrow the government? Boerevolk? Old men wanting the old ways back, I'm white I'm Afrikaans and I'm African I do not want any segregation or degradation in my lifetime. Luckily us, the youth, can move away from this hate and create a true colorless SA.

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-23 10:16

The white youth yes, not too sure about the black youth who are being indioctrinated daily to continue with the hatred.

      azande.futhi - 2012-07-23 10:29

@rudi, good comment. we all long for that era. @rob, u are way off tune and misinformed. young blacks share the same sentiments with rudi.

      rudi.j.vanvuren - 2012-07-23 10:32

I would hope that it is all youth, but with each passing generation we will forget apartheid and move forward to a better SA. Would it happen for my generation? Maybe not, but I will start it.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-23 10:36

Rudi, what is keeping you from doing so then?.

      rudi.j.vanvuren - 2012-07-23 10:44

jacqui.daanevanrensburg - Nothing keeping me from being the change I want to see, but it should be a collective effort, thats why I say I might not be able to change much now, but I can start that change. azande.futhi - Yesterday I saw two kids playing at a function one white and one black and none the wiser, just having a jol thats what I want to see. It was really heart warming.

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-07-23 09:44

Judging by the results of Clive Derby-Lewis's parole application , there's no hope for Oom Vis en kie .

  • Skhumbuzo Mthembu - 2012-07-23 09:48

    piet u r stupid fool.

  • azande.futhi - 2012-07-23 09:59

Please sentence them five life imprisonment and additional 200 years behind bars without the possibility of parole.

  • thandazile.selana1 - 2012-07-23 16:46

idiots like all their kind (crminals hahahah) will rot in jail with their idiotic dream

  • banele.xaji - 2012-07-27 16:51
