Boeremag 'weakling' wants bail

2012-08-21 22:18

Johannesburg - A Pretoria accountant described as a "weak" member of the Boeremag wants to apply for bail after more than 10 years in jail.

Adriaan van Wyk's lawyer, Daan Mostert, told Judge Eben Jordaan his client wanted to apply for bail.

This was after a remark by the judge that he was wondering if more years should be added to the over 10 years Van Wyk had already spent in jail awaiting trial.

The judge said in his judgment it would be taken into account when sentencing was passed that Van Wyk had not attended many Boeremag meetings and was regarded by the others as "weak".

Van Wyk and fellow-accused Jurie Vermeulen were the only two who said they would be ready to present argument regarding sentencing next week.

Lawyers for the rest of the 20 accused told the judge they needed until January next year to prepare.

All 20 of the accused have been convicted of high treason stemming from a rightwing plot to violently overthrow the ANC government.

The Boeremag's bomb squad, consisting of Herman van Rooyen, Rudi Gouws and brothers Johan, Kobus and Wilhelm Pretorius, were in addition found guilty of attempting to murder former president Nelson Mandela.

They were also found guilty of murdering Claudia Mokone in Soweto in October 2002. Mokone died when a piece of steel dislodged by a bomb on a railway line landed in her shack.

The trial was postponed to August 27.

@rodney.sambo, nothing to do with ANC or government? On the contrary - the ANC, backed by the then Soviet Union and other communist countries - especially Cuba - were the original terrorists who used children as cannon-fodder to launch their onslaught against South Africa and applied the most horrific methods to quell any opposition to their campaign to take over the country - bombings, necklacings, whatever. And even today the terror still continues in the form of maldaministration, unfetterd crime. Do I need to spell it out, or are you intelligent enough to see what I'm getting at? These things are what the Boeremag (erroneously) wanted to prevent, but were unsuccessful - unfortunately, hence under ANC mis-rule S.A. has slid into a cesspool of crime, corruption and filth of gigantic proportions, and still Zuma continues to sing "Leth' umshini wami..." without doing anything to rectify the problems...

Julie so true what you are saying, using whites is highly inappropriate to use, white people is a better reference Rodney

These 20 do not and never did represent the views or desire of the majority of white people in South Africa, therefore the lack of commenting. HOWEVER, the majority of white people ARE concerned with the high level of corruption and total lack of ethics displayed by the current government and 'leaders' at all levels. It seems that all that was built up over decades, are being broken down for the sake of personal power and position, with NO REGARD for the greater good or the future.

Yes, let's just ignore the Boeremag and focus on everything else....huh that should work well....

Just goes to show whats of interest to the most of South Africans. As much as I am tempted to agree with you Rodney I must also say that the views of the Boeremag are views of a minority. Its unfortunate that in this day and age we still have people with such foolish aspirations and lack of respect for fellow citizens. However let us not try to justify the actions of the boeremag by comparing them to the actions of the ANC in exile. A loss of a life brings pain to the grieving family and should not be taken for granted - irrespective of the cause.

I ain't scared of replying, I am proud to be a white, Afrikaans speaking male and am not an apologist (Which means, if you expect me to be all sorry for being who and what I am, you are in for a rude surprise). I am not expecting any hand outs, and though the current BEE system is stacked against me, I will find a way. Life is hard, it is even harder if you are stupid. I am committed to this country and its constitution and am not going anywhere. I was raised to have respect for the person, not the colour of his skin. These so called "boeremag" members are nothing but pure idiots and do not represent anything that I stand for, though they took it on themselves to act as if they had the support of all white people in the country. They are a fringe group. Cry me a river if they get life in prison. What did all their plotting get them ? A dead mother. Cowards.

Aptly put Ian... I somehow I think that the utterances that Mr Sticky Toffee, Rodney and the like are more finger blitz rather than though-out commentary. Anyhow.. thanks for your comment.
