Johannesburg - A Pretoria accountant described as a "weak" member of the Boeremag wants to apply for bail after more than 10 years in jail.

Adriaan van Wyk's lawyer, Daan Mostert, told Judge Eben Jordaan his client wanted to apply for bail.

This was after a remark by the judge that he was wondering if more years should be added to the over 10 years Van Wyk had already spent in jail awaiting trial.

The judge said in his judgment it would be taken into account when sentencing was passed that Van Wyk had not attended many Boeremag meetings and was regarded by the others as "weak".

Van Wyk and fellow-accused Jurie Vermeulen were the only two who said they would be ready to present argument regarding sentencing next week.

Lawyers for the rest of the 20 accused told the judge they needed until January next year to prepare.

All 20 of the accused have been convicted of high treason stemming from a rightwing plot to violently overthrow the ANC government.

The Boeremag's bomb squad, consisting of Herman van Rooyen, Rudi Gouws and brothers Johan, Kobus and Wilhelm Pretorius, were in addition found guilty of attempting to murder former president Nelson Mandela.

They were also found guilty of murdering Claudia Mokone in Soweto in October 2002. Mokone died when a piece of steel dislodged by a bomb on a railway line landed in her shack.

The trial was postponed to August 27.
