Johannesburg - A woman was raped and her friend robbed by men posing as police in the Brackensdown area on Friday, East Rand police said.
Superintendent Andy Pieke said the 42-year-old woman, driving a Toyota Cressida, and her 41-year-old male friend, in a Corolla, were forced to stop their cars near the Klip River off-ramp after midnight.
"They were stopped by three vehicles - a white Volkswagen Polo with a blue light and a white Mazda and an Opel Astra. The occupants of the Polo were wearing what looked like police uniforms and they spoke Zulu and Sotho," he said.
The attackers threatened the couple with firearms and forced them out their cars.
They then took their cellphones and personal possessions.
The couple were then forced into separate vehicles and taken in different directions.
"One of the robbers raped the woman before leaving her in a veld near Alrode. The robbers also forced the man out of the car.
"The two, however, managed to get to the police and report what had occurred about 02:30," Pieke said.
One of their vehicles was recovered on the N12 near Alberton, and the other near Albertsdal, Alberton.
Pieke said it was suspected that the two may have been followed from the Wesbank raceway in Germiston.
