Johannesburg - Three bogus metro police officers crashed into a rock during a high speed chase with police in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the trio's vehicle, which had a blue light on the dashboard, was spotted by officers on the N3 highway.

"When they followed the vehicle, it sped off and a chase... ensued. The vehicle later crashed into a rock," he said.

"The suspects jumped out, jumped a wall and locked themselves into a nearby house. With the help of the community, police forcefully opened the house and arrested them."

Two people, who were allegedly kidnapped during a truck hijacking earlier, were rescued from the crashed vehicle.

They were examined by paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital.

The hijacked truck, which was transporting cellphones from Kempton Park, has not yet been found.

Three unlicensed firearms, two blue lights and metro police reflector jackets were found in the vehicle.

One of the suspects is believed to be a an ex-policeman from Ga-Rankuwa who was dishonourably discharged in 2013.

The three are expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court soon.
