Johannesburg - A small group of disgruntled Hillbrow residents handed a memorandum to the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday, protesting against evictions from city buildings.
Community leader Moses Ka Moyo said: "We are suffering because of corrupt officials who issue fraudulent court papers to bogus owners. They come to evict us, with police who beat us,"
Residents marched from Joubert Park to the court where they handed the memorandum to High Court official Daisy Mngomezulu and Hillbrow police's Superintendent Stanley Nevhuhulwi.
Was evicted by police
A mother of four, Jabu Nxele, said she was evicted from her flat in Berea by a woman who claimed she was the new owner.
"I bought the place 10 years ago and it was subsidised by the government. I was paying my levies. Out of nowhere, a woman came to my place claiming to be the new owner."
Nxele said she was evicted on May 26 by police and security guards.
"We have nowhere else to go because everywhere I have been they advised me to get a lawyer. I can't afford one."
She now rents a flat in Berea.
