Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Prison's visiting area was evacuated on Sunday morning after police received a bomb threat, a correctional services spokesperson said.
Isaac Mosiane said someone called the police emergency number and told them there was a bomb in the prison's visiting area next to the Southgate shopping centre.
The visiting area serves four prisons in the vicinity.
Police arrived at the centre at 11:40 said Mosiane.
The area was evacuated and searched by the bomb squad with sniffer dogs, but no bomb was found.
Police also searched the cars parked outside the area, but found nothing.
The public was allowed back into the area at 12.40pm, said Mosiane.
