Cape Town - A part of the crowded V&A Waterfront in Cape Town was cordoned off on Tuesday night after two suspicious-looking carry bags were found outside the Mitchell's Waterfront Brewery.

The police's André Traut says sniffer dogs were immediately brought in.

When they were unable to rule out the possibility of explosives, police decided to destroy the bags in controlled explosions.

The bags had contained books, said Traut.

The area has since been reopened.
