Boom gates to come down
2003-07-18 12:15
Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Roads Agency will start dismantling illegal boom gates, mainly in the city's northern suburbs, on Friday.
The deadline for applications to legalise the gates ended on Thursday night, and the city council rejected last-minute calls for an extension.
The council contends that most of the boom gates hamper traffic flow and deny people freedom of movement in public places.
However, various resident associations insist that the booms deter criminals.
