Johannesburg - A radio communication centre to assist in combating crime in Gauteng was officially opened by President Thabo Mbeki at the South African Police Services (SAPS)'s Radio Communication Centre in Midrand on Monday.
By dialling 10111, call centre operators will now be able to dispatch police who are much closer to the crime scene, therefore increasing police efficiency.
"The launch of this service displays a renewed sense of duty and extra effort by the SAPS," Mbeki said.
"Vehicle response will now be much quicker as call centre agents will be able to despatch cars to the scene of the crime more quickly."
Mbeki said that police officers - in the light of this new service - had to show more urgency when attending to crimes. He also called on community members to assist police in combating crime.
The new communication centre was supported by Altech Communications.
Similar facilities will be launched in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape soon.
