Pretoria - The University of South Africa (Unisa) expressed sadness over the death of Professor Russel Botman, rector and vice-chancellor of Stellenbosch University.

"Professor Botman was a quiet man but a principled individual and leader, who we all knew to be deeply committed to the upliftment of his community and specifically the transformation of Stellenbosch University and our country," vice-chancellor and principal Mandla Makhanya said on Monday.

"He will be sorely missed by all of us in higher education but his legacy will keep us focused on taking his achievements even further."

Unisa sent its condolences to Botman's family and the Stellenbosch University community.

Botman died in his sleep at his home in Stellenbosch on Friday night.

Botman joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as a professor in the practical theology and missiology department.

In 2002 he was appointed vice-rector.
