Pietermaritzburg - A child was killed on his way to school on Monday when he was hit by a car as he crossed the road.

Siyabonga Ndlovu, 10, was hit by an SUV on the Umbumbulu road near the Ingomankulu turn-off.

“I last saw my boy in the morning around 07:00 as he was leaving for school, and I was also on my way to work,” said his mother, Zama Ndlovu, a farm worker.

She said she still could not believe that her son was gone. “I still imagine that he is going to come back from school, running into the house.”

Ndlovu said she was fetched by the school principal, who informed her that Siyabonga had been involved in an accident.

“I saw the woman who knocked my son and she apologised for the accident, saying it was a mistake,” said Ndlovu.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said that visibility on that particular stretch of road at the time of the accident was extremely poor because of the angle of the sun.
