Johannesburg - An 11-year-old boy was injured while playing rugby in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg on Friday, paramedics said.

"The boy was allegedly playing an informal game of rugby with some of his friends before the first school bell," said ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser.

"He allegedly tried to tackle a player from the opposing team when he sustained the injury."

Paramedics found the boy still on the field.

"It was a serious injury. The boy received treatment at the scene for suspected back and neck injuries before being airlifted to Union Hospital [in Alberton] for further medical care," said Visser.
