Boy, 11, drowns in farm dam
Grahamstown - An 11-year-old boy has drowned in a farm dam in Alexandria, near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.
He was swimming with friends in the dam when he disappeared under the water at about 16:00 on Monday, said Captain Mali Govender.
His friends were unable to find him and police were called to help with the search. His body was later found on the surface of the dam.
An inquest docket had been opened.
Govender said police were concerned at the increasing numbers of children who swam unsupervised.
Some tied empty plastic cooldrink bottles to their arms as makeshift armbands, but this did not overcome the dangers associated with unsupervised swimming, she said.
