Pretoria - The body of a 5-year-old boy whose mother is accused of killing him was covered in purple bruises and had burn marks on his hand and the back of the neck, a police officer has told a North West court.

When a police inspector pulled down Anthony Erasmus’s underpants, he also saw a burn wound on his private parts, Beeld reported.

The child’s mother, Denise Jansen, 25, and her boyfriend, Marco Barnard, 30, are accused of abusing and killing the child.

Warrant officer Audrey Motsepe testified how he found the dead child’s mother at their home on the day of his death.

“I asked her what happened. She said her child felt dizzy and fell. He was declared dead on the scene.

The post-mortem showed that the boy died due to bleeding on the brain after being hit with a hard object.

The court heard that the child had been physically abused over an extended period of time and that social workers had investigated similar claims against Jansen.

Jansen has three other children, including a baby with Barnard.
