Johannesburg - A 5-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at a house in Parkview, Johannesburg on Saturday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the boy fell into the pool for an unknown period of time before his mother found him.

She pulled him out of the water and performed CPR on him.

Paramedics arrived at the house and tried to revive the child but he had died at the scene.

This is so tragic.. and so completely unnecessary! Parents need to ensure their children are water safe! My heart breaks for the family.

After potty training... go to the swim class. A 5y old is more than capable to manage a swim to safety after 5 classes at the expense of less than R1000.

providing that he does not bump his head when he falls in. Very shallow comment. My most sincere condolences to the family. There is NOTHING worse in life than losing a child.

Actually, the best time to make the child water smart, is before he starts to crawl. Babies are first used to lying on their backs - which is the ideal time to teach them to float. When they start crawling, they get used to being face-down. This is the worst time to teach them to swim as they instinctively turn face down instead of face up. My kids could float unassisted in a pool before they could crawl.

Shame it really is very sad, but if they had brought him back he wouldn't have been the same kid anymore... It is so important to teach our kids to swim and most places takes babies as young as 6 months... Also make sure all safety gears are in place like gates and pool covers... I'm not 100% sure but i think there is a law that says if u have kids, pools have to be behind a locked fence at all times... Thoughts are with the family...
