Johannesburg - An eight-year-old boy was presumed to have drowned after he and five other children were swept out to sea at the Wedge beach in Durban, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Wednesday.
"He is missing and presumed to have drowned," NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.
The children were swept out to sea around 13:20 on Wednesday.
"eThekwini pro lifeguards rescued five of the children using Malibu rescue boards (long board). One of the children, believed to be an eight-year-old boy, disappeared into the surf."
A rescue helicopter as well as police and paramedics joined in the search for the boy.
The sea search was stopped around 16:00 due to the surf conditions, but Lambinon said air and shore searches would continue.
The identity of the child has not yet been released.
