Johannesburg - A 14-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after he fell from a staircase railing at his school in Potchefstroom.

Beeld reported that Francois Markram was flown to hospital after he lost his balance and fell about one-and-a-half metres from a railing.

Another pupil said Markram was trying to slide down the railing with his backpack on his back when he fell. A girl tried to grab hold of him but it was too late.

The boy’s heart stopped beating and paramedics had to resuscitate him.

He was taken to hospital where his ruptured spleen was removed.

Markram had just recovered from a serious accident last year, when he was trapped under a firefighting vehicle on his parents’ farm and had to spend months on crutches.
