Boy dies after fall at school

2011-01-18 20:27

Johannesburg - A six-year-old boy died after falling out the second storey of a school in Johannesburg Central, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Police arrived at Providence Academy on Pritchard Street at 07:00 on Tuesday to find a crowd gathered around the boy on the pavement, said Warrant Officer Jerbes de Bruyn.

He said paramedics declared the boy dead on the scene.

The boy was believed to have been a pupil at the academy, although De Bruyn could not confirm this.

"The child's mother was contacted. She informed police that the child suffered from epilepsy and thought he maybe had a fit," he said.

An inquest docket was opened.

Condolences to the family - what a sad loss!! Maybe SA schools need to finally look at having balconies totally enclosed - all kids (including me when I was in school) hang over the wall or rails - this is not the first death/accident I've read about.... just a thought

I fully agree. Or keep the young ones on ground level. May this family find comfort in God

This is so sad, our schools should start investing in the safety of our kids, it's sad that something so tragic had to happen before ppl can actually be aware of the dangers surounding our kids at schools.
