Johannesburg - A boy drowned after he slipped while playing on the edge of a river in Matsula, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.

The seven-year-old was throwing stones into the river with a friend on Wednesday when he lost his footing, said Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Hlathi.

The drowning was the third in the province since the weekend.

A man, aged 72, and his 21-year-old son, drowned in Acornhoek on Saturday.

They were fishing when their boat capsized.
